ELCA Pastor to Preach on 'Day 1'
07-139-LL*

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Michael W. Foss, Lutheran Church
of the Redeemer, Atlanta, will preach Aug. 12 and 19 on "Day 1,"
a nationally broadcast radio program. Foss' first sermon,
"Wishful Thinking, Optimism and Hope," is based on Hebrews 11 and
will address the differences between wishful thinking, optimism
and biblical hope. The Aug. 19 sermon is titled "Deep Footings,
Wide Support" and will explore faith as an antidote for fear.
The broadcasts include a 5-minute interview with Foss by the
program's executive producer, Peter Wallace. Foss also preached
on "Day 1" in 2000.
"Faith gives birth to hope, for hope, when it sees the world
as it is and comprehends the presence and activity of God, dares
to reach into the future believing that this same God of grace is
already there preparing the future for us," Foss said in "Wishful
Thinking, Optimism and Hope."
Foss is a graduate of Pacific Lutheran University (PLU),
Tacoma, Wash., Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa, and
Mount Angel Benedictine Seminary, Mount Angel, Ore. From 1993 to
2006 Foss was pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church,
Burnsville, Minn. His most recent book, "From Members to
Disciples," examines leadership lessons from the New Testament
book of Acts. PLU is one of 28 ELCA colleges and universities,
and Wartburg is one of eight ELCA seminaries.
"Day 1" has been broadcast every week for 62 years, winning
numerous awards in the process, including the George Foster
Peabody Award and the 2003 Crystal Award for Excellence in
inspirational radio. It is produced by the Alliance for
Christian Media in association with the ELCA, Cooperative Baptist
Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the United Methodist Church,
the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and the United Church of
Christ.
"Day 1" broadcasts are also available by streaming audio and
podcast at http://www.Day1.net on the Web. A television version
is broadcast Sunday mornings on the Hallmark Channel's "Naomi's
New Morning" series.
