ELCA NEWS SERVICE February 4, 2004 ELCA Seminary Lecture Series to Examine 'Evangelism Today' 04-016-FI CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Proclaiming the gospel is one reason many Lutherans give for having a Lutheran Church, but they have a harder time describing how that happens outside a Sunday morning sermon. The eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will host the 2004 Hein-Fry Lecture Series, "Evangelism Today: Lutheran Theology and Practice," to examine that idea. The Rev. Edgar M. Krentz and the Rev. David L. Tiede will each present lectures at four of the seminaries over the next three months. Krentz is a retired professor of New Testament, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Tiede is president and professor of New Testament, Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn. Tiede will begin the series Feb. 5 at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C.; Feb. 24 at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia; and Feb. 27 at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary, Berkeley, Calif. Krentz will speak March 5 at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago. Tiede will give his final lecture in the series March 11 at the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa. Krentz will close the series with lectures April 15 at Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa; April 29 at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio; and April 30 at Luther Seminary. The Hein-Fry Lecture Series predates the ELCA, which was formed in 1988. The endowed theological lecture series is coordinated by the ELCA Division for Ministry in cooperation with the eight seminaries to foster original scholarship and enrich theological dialogue throughout the church. The series combines the Dr. Carl Christian Hein Memorial Seminary Lectures of the former American Lutheran Church and the Franklin Clark Fry Theological Lectures of the former Lutheran Church in America. -- -- -- The Web pages at http://www.elca.org/dm/hf/ have information about the lecture series.
