Wait, my soul, silent for God. For God alone, my hope.
Alone my rock, my safety, my refuge; I stand secure. - Psalm 62:6-7
Sisters and brothers in Christ,
A federal disaster declaration has been made for four counties in central Florida after severe storms and tornados swept through the region in the early morning Friday, and relief efforts are now underway.
Power has been restored to most homes and businesses in the affected area, and state officials completed search and rescue operations over the weekend, confirming 20 fatalities as a result of the storm. As of Sunday evening, 1,100 applications had been made to FEMA for individual assistance funding, and some applicants have already received funds electronically. The maximum FEMA grant available is $28,200.
Danielle Kearney, LDR coordinator with Lutheran Services Florida, attended the Florida VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) meeting on Sunday afternoon, and she reports that the response by all disaster agencies has been very positive.
Local long-term recovery committees have been activated to coordinate the response efforts of the various disaster partners. Coordination for debris removal and putting tarps on damaged roofs is being handled by Christian Contractors. Second Harvest Food Bank is coordinating all food donations. Distribution of food and other necessary items is being coordinated by the American Red Cross and Adventists Community Services Disaster Response, and over 2,600 meals had been provided through lunchtime Sunday. The Florida VOAD will be looking to open a warehouse in the Orlando area to manage and coordinate all disaster donations.
Lutheran Services Florida, the LDR affiliate for the state, will be coordinating volunteers interested in serving in the affected area as the long-term recovery begins. Lutheran Counseling Services has already sent a team to visit the impacted counties to begin assessing the spiritual and emotional care needs of those affected.
Our coordinator has learned in initial contacts with local clergy, as well as with the synod and district, that the homes of several Lutheran congregants were damaged by this storm. As is most often the case in our work, this means that Lutherans will likely be both giving and receiving assistance as we live out our mission to serve all those who are affected.
Prayer for this day:
O God, work within us so that we know
That the cup of sorrow is also our cup of joy.
Grant us joy of life, even in our sorrow,
That we may fully know your love for us.
Send us out now as willing servants, ready to drink your cup. Amen.
In service,
Heather Feltman, Executive Director
