Lutheran Disaster Response is leading a well-coordinated response to the deadly tornado that struck Enterprise, Alabama last Thursday. Numerous faith-based and governmental disaster response groups have poured out support for the various communities affected by last week's storms. The tornado, part of a deadly weather system that swept across the Midwest and South and spawned more than two dozen tornadoes, left as many as 20 people dead across the U.S.
Christ the King Lutheran Church in Enterprise has been designated as the local volunteer staging area. With proven experience coordinating volunteers, Lutheran Disaster Response is lending its volunteer tracking system and producing official volunteer I.D. badges. As of Sunday evening, approximately 580 volunteers had been registered.
A group of ten volunteers, representing Lutheran Men in Mission, are working in Enterprise today. Additionally, a small team of LDR construction personnel will leave for Enterprise shortly.
Mark Johnston, LDR coordinator for Alabama, and Ken Skalitsky, a Voluntary Agency Liaison with FEMA, met with media and the general public on Sunday, at the request of Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell. They described the immediate and long-term needs in the area and explained the process of recovery after disaster.
Lutheran Disaster Response is also attending to the spiritual and emotional needs of the community. LDR personnel are supporting local faith community leaders in their pivotal role of sustaining the community. Additionally, members of the LDR Chaplain's Network are being deployed to provide consultation and support to the community.
Lutheran Disaster Response will continue to journey with these disaster-affected communities, bringing help, healing and hope in these difficult times. We lift up in prayer all those affected, especially those who lost loved ones in this tragedy.
