Dear friends in Christ,
We need your help to respond to the devastation Hurricane Georges left
behind in the Florida Keys and in Puerto Rico. Thanks to so many of you
who are asking how to help. The answer still is not simple.
In THE FLORIDA KEYS, the immediate need is for volunteers to help with
clean up. Dr. Gary Harbaugh (ELCA Florida-Bahamas Synod Staff) notes, "It
is a hot job in the sun and the trip to the southern Keys takes some time
and patience, but it is of great help to our sisters and brothers there."
A Lutheran Disaster Response volunteer coordinator, Jessica Smith, has been
named, and can be contacted at 1-800-441-9548
In PUERTO RICO, Camp Eduardo Roig had electricity restored this week. A
toll-free telephone number, installed to the LDR office there,
unfortunately connected to a local business. Volunteers are needed now,
and for the long-term recovery effort. As soon as we have that
information, it will be posted on-line.
I will be taking a vacation week beginning October 17th. If you need to
make a disaster response contact, please call:
Ms. Elaine Richter, Associate Director, Lutheran Disaster Response
1-800-248-1930, extension 1392
or
Ms. Johanna Olson, Assistant, ELCA Domestic Disaster Response
1-773-380-2822
Always, prayer support is vital and sustaining. And contributions provide
the means for the church to respond.
