Dear friends in Christ,
Lutheran Disaster Response (a cooperative ministry of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America and The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod) is
responding to wildfires that have been burning in Northern California.
Richard Stahlke, president of Lutheran Social Services of North California,
relayed an initial report that in Butte County 24 houses have been
destroyed, and in the Redding area of Shasta County (north of Sacramento)
220 houses have been totally destroyed. Hundreds of additional mobile
homes and houses have also been affected. These initial numbers are
expected to rise.
It is estimated that 80 percent of the homeowners are low-income families,
and are either underinsured or without insurance.
LSS-NC is on the scene and Dick is managing the assessment and designing
the response. Lutheran Disaster Response is providing an initial emergency
grant, start-up funds for interfaith efforts.
Please remember and keep in your prayers our California brothers and
sisters whose lives have been affected by this latest natural disaster, and
those who are providing assistance and recovery.
In Christ,
Gil Furst
