ELCA Communicators Earn Awards from the Associated Church Press

     ORLANDO, Fla. (ELCA) -- The Associated Church Press (ACP)
honored several communicators of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America (ELCA) April 25 at its annual "Best of the Christian
Press" for 2005 awards program.  The program was part of ACP's
annual convention which took place here April 23-26 at the
Florida Mall Hotel.  Founded in 1916, the ACP is the oldest
religious press association in North America.
     Earning ACP's highest award, "Cafe" received a "Best in
Class" Award of Excellence in the Independent Web site or E-zine
category.  Cafe is an e-zine of Women of the ELCA, the women's
organization of the church.  Elizabeth McBride is editor of Cafe.
The judges said, "Cafe is clear, focused and relevant to the
concerns of young women who want to confront large questions with
the help of a calm voice and some thoughts from Scripture."
     Women of the ELCA's magazine -- "Lutheran Woman Today" --
earned three awards.  An Award of Merit in the
Devotional/Inspirational: Long Format category went to Lutheran
Woman Today's "Transformation One Foot at a Time" by Lynn C.
Ramshaw, September issue.  The magazine's Web site --
http://www.lutheranwomantoday.org -- received an Award of Merit
in the Publication Web site category.  Eva Yeo serves as editor
of the Web site.  Lutheran Woman Today tied for an Honorable
Mention in the Feature Article: Denominational Special Interest
Magazine category for "Gratitude: Our Gladness Made Visible" by
Karen Melang, November issue.
     The Lutheran -- the magazine of the ELCA -- received eight
awards from the ACP:
+ Award of Excellence, Devotional/Inspirational: Long Format,
"Counting the Last Days" by Walter Bouman, November issue
+ Award of Excellence, Magazine Cover, "They Came to the Tomb"
created by Janet McKenzie, designed by Michael D. Watson, April
issue
+ Award of Excellence, Humor Graphic, "You Didn't Know it was
Missing" by Watson, January issue
+ Award of Merit, Letters to the Editor, "Letters" edited by
Sonia C. Solomonson, designed by Watson, June issue
+ Award of Merit, Magazine Design: Entire Issue, 4-Color, The
Lutheran's December issue, designed by Amber R. Leberman and
Watson
+ Award of Merit, E-Promotion, The Lutheran's "E-Promotion" by
Leberman
+ Honorable Mention, Convention Coverage: Magazine, coverage of
the 2005 ELCA Churchwide Assembly by The Lutheran staff, Chicago
+ Tie for Honorable Mention, In-Depth Coverage: Magazine, "The
Uncharted Journey" by Solomonson, editor, June issue
     The ELCA News Service, Chicago, earned an Award of Merit in
the Convention Coverage: News Service category for its coverage
of the 2005 ELCA Churchwide Assembly, June 16-Aug. 22.  The ELCA
News Service received an Honorable Mention in the Publication Web
site category for http://ELCA.org/news on the Internet, edited by
John R. Brooks, Frank Imhoff and Melissa Ramirez Cooper.  It
received another Honorable Mention in the Theme Issue:
Newspaper, Newsletter, News Service or Web site category for
"ELCA Presiding Bishop and LWF President Visits Middle East" by
John R. Brooks, Aug. 29-Sept. 6.
