William Rindy Elected Bishop of ELCA Eastern North Dakota Synod

     CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. William E. (Bill) Rindy, First
Lutheran Church, Fargo, N.D., was elected April 6 to a six-year
term as bishop of the Eastern North Dakota Synod of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  He received 372
votes to 177 votes for the Rev. Jeffery L. Sandgren, Olivet
Lutheran Church, Fargo, cast on the fourth ballot at the synod
assembly April 5-6 at the Fargo Civic Center.
     Sandgren led on the first two ballots.  On the third ballot
Rindy received 272 votes, Sandgren 179 votes and the Rev. Andrea
DeGroot-Nesdahl, former bishop, ELCA South Dakota Synod, Sioux
Falls, 107 votes.
     There were eight nominees on the first ballot.
     Rindy, 46, succeeds the Rev. Richard J. (Rick) Foss as
bishop July 1.  Rindy's formal installation as bishop will be
Aug. 16 at Hope Lutheran Church, South Campus, Fargo.  Foss, 63,
has served as bishop of the synod since 1992 and was ineligible
for re-election.
     Born in Mayville, N.D., Rindy graduated from Mayville State
University, Mayville, and Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn.
Luther is one of eight ELCA seminaries.
     Rindy taught math and physics at Carrington High School,
Carrington, N.D.  Following ordination in 1992, he served as
pastor of Shiloh Lutheran Church, Elmore, Minn., and Trinity
Lutheran Church, Lisbon, N.D.
     Rindy and his wife Louise, a registered nurse, are the
parents of two daughters.
     The ELCA Eastern North Dakota Synod includes 102,614
Lutherans in 234 congregations across 22 counties.  The synod
office is in Fargo.
