SYNOD YOUTH PRESIDENTS MEET

"Leadership has something to do with knowing
where people are," said the Rev. H. George
Anderson, bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America, to 110 youth and their
adult advisors. The Council of Synod
Lutheran Youth Organization Presidents
gathered in Chicago Feb. 15-18. Leadership
requires supporting and listening to people
in your area, said Anderson. Responding to
questions, Anderson said the biggest problem
facing the ELCA is "helping the church turn
eyes outward rather than back to its
history." The synod LYO presidents passed
resolutions asking youth to write to their
elected officials asking for increased
foreign aid and encouraging the exploration
of new communication avenues, including
e-mail and Internet, for those involved in
youth ministry. Workshop topics included
the work of Lutheran Peace Fellowship, AIDS,
images of God, the Evergreen youth
television program and land mines. The
group elected Norah Bringer, Tacoma, Wash.,
chair; Jay McDivitt, Loveland, Colo.,
secretary; Matthew Peterson, Red Wing,
Minn., male youth representative to the ELCA
Church Council; Marie Segre, Oakland Park,
Fla., female representative.
