SPANISH LUTHERAN WORSHIP BOOK

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America has a new Spanish
worship book on the way. "Liturgia y Canci#n" is projected to be
available to congregations in December 1997. The steering
committee had its final meeting April 12-14 in Chicago to
finalize the contents of the book. It will take the next 10 to
15 months to get copyrights, permissions and proofreading done,
reports Evelyn Soto, ELCA director for multicultural and
multilingual ministries. The 640-page book will contain
liturgies, rites, new services and hymns from South American,
Central American, Mexican and Caribbean traditions. Soto says
she knows of about 160 congregations who have at least one
worship service in Spanish. The ELCA has about 27,000 Hispanic
members. Congregations are eager for this resources, says Soto.
Currently congregations who want to worship in Spanish "must
create their own resources or pull them together from a number of
different places," she said. The Rev. Pedro M. Suarez, Esperanza
de Santa Maria Lutheran Church, Chicago, is chair of the steering
committee.
