Title: Lutheran College $80 Million Fund-Raising Campaign ELCA NEWS SERVICE - NEWSBRIEF February 11, 1997 $80 MILLION FUND-RAISING CAMPAIGN FOR AUGUSTANA Augustana College officials announced Jan. 22 "Tradition and Promise: The Augustana Campaign," an $80 million fund-raising campaign expected to last through the end of the century. Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill., is one of 28 colleges and universities associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. "This is the most ambitious campaign in the history of Augustana," said Martin Carver, chair of the Augustana College Board of Trustees. The campaign will provide funding for $41.65 million in capital projects, including a $23 million science building, a studio arts building, new music facilities added to the Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts, a student recreation center, studios for Augustana's WVIK public radio station, a student services building, and renovations to existing residence facilities on campus. In addition, the capital projects portion of the campaign includes the F.W. Olin Educational Technology Center, made possible by a $7.5 million grant announced in September 1996. The impact of the over $40 million building program on the Quad Cities economy is expected to be significant, according to Dr. Thomas Tredway, president of Augustana. "In meeting the important physical needs of the College's future, we are pleased that benefit will accrue to our home community in the form of construction jobs, the aesthetic improvement of our campus and the effect on the local economy of our growing program and budget," said Tredway. In addition to the capital projects, Tredway said the Tradition and Promise campaign would also generate $34.85 million in endowment resources. This includes faculty chairs and professorships, scholarships and lectureships, among other areas. Currently the Augustana endowment stands at roughly $45 million. "$80 million is an ambitious goal, but it does reflect Augustana's needs, and it is attainable if we are diligent in our efforts," Tredway said.
