RURAL MINISTRY TAKES TEAMWORK

The importance of clergy and laity working together in rural
congregations was the theme of the 1997 Rural Ministry Conference
held March 2-4 in Dubuque, Iowa. Wartburg Theological Seminary
and the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary sponsored
"Ministry Together: New Models for Laity and Clergy" through the
Center for Theology and Land. Wartburg is one of the eight
seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Helen
Harms, coordinator of the ELCA's Small Town and Rural (STaR)
team, was one of the main presenters. The Rev. Sarah Henrich,
assistant professor of New Testament, Luther Seminary, St. Paul,
Minn., provided the Bible study. "GIFTS: Growing in Faith to
Serve" was a workshop for ELCA participants. The Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), United Methodist Church, and the Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) and United Church of Christ hosted
workshops too.
