KATHY MAGNUS RECEIVES SPECIAL RECOGNITION
97-CA-38-DB

PHILADELPHIA (ELCA) -- Kathy J. Magnus, outgoing vice
president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, was
honored with a special award at the fifth biennial Churchwide
Assembly held Aug. 14-20 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.
For her six years of service, Magnus received the ELCA Servus Dei
Medal from Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson. The award
recognizes retiring officers of the church.
Anderson remarked that Magnus had been his mentor, and he
thanked her for her friendship. With grateful tears, Magnus
received the award and was commended with a standing ovation from
the more than 1,000 assembly members.
Magnus was first elected vice president of the ELCA in 1991
and re-elected in 1995. Vice president is the church's top, lay,
volunteer position.
Magnus resigned as vice president, effective at the close of
the assembly. Her husband, Richard, became executive director of
the ELCA Division for Outreach on July 15.
