Title: Myrna Sheie Named Executive Assistant to ELCA Bishop ELCA NEWS SERVICE August 26, 1998 MYRNA SHEIE NAMED EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT TO ELCA BISHOP 98-30-177-AH CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Myrna J. Sheie, 52, Anoka, Minn., has been named executive assistant to Presiding Bishop H. George Anderson of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America effective Oct 1. "Myrna Sheie will bring a depth of experience and numerous gifts to this position," Anderson said. "I am confident that she will serve this office and the church well in the years to come." Sheie has served as assistant to the bishop of the ELCA's Saint Paul (Minn.) Area Synod since 1988. Prior to the formation of the ELCA Sheie worked in the Division for Life and Mission in the Congregation of the former American Lutheran Church, specializing in communications and youth education resources. Sheie was a final candidate for ELCA vice president at the 1997 ELCA Churchwide Assembly. She graduated summa cum laude in English and education from Augsburg College, Minneapolis, in 1968. She has undertaken graduate studies at St. Thomas University, St. Paul. As one of three assistants to the bishop, Sheie's new responsibilities will include developing agendas for the ELCA's Church Council meetings and churchwide assemblies. She will provide leadership in churchwide planning and budgeting processes and serve as a liaison for the bishop with synods of the ELCA. Sheie succeeds Lita Brusick Johnson, who is now director for the ELCA's World Hunger and Disaster Appeals. Sheie is married to Stephen Carl Sheie; they are the parents of two adult sons.
