LUTHERANS AID RELIEF EFFORTS IN KENTUCKY AFTER TORNADO STRIKE
00-08-MR
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- Lutheran Disaster Response, a ministry of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and the Lutheran
Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), is participating in recovery efforts in
Owensboro, Ky., after a tornado struck there Jan. 3.
Initial assessments indicate more than 110 homes were destroyed
and more than 250 homes were severely damaged, said the Rev. Gilbert B.
Furst, director for Lutheran Disaster Response. Furst said there were
no fatalities. About 8,000 homes were without electricity shortly after
the storm.
Lutheran Disaster Response is working closely with the ELCA
Indiana-Kentucky Synod and with the LCMS Indiana District to bring
congregations together to support relief efforts, Furst said.
"Faith Lutheran Church (ELCA) and Peace Lutheran Church (LCMS) are
distribution points for food and emergency needs," said Furst. "Both
congregations have received emergency cash grants from Lutheran Disaster
Response to undergird their outreach in the community," he said.
