LUTHERAN COMMUNICATORS HONORED BY ASSOCIATED CHURCH PRESS

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The communication endeavors of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were recognized here March 30 by the
Associated Church Press (ACP), which presents awards for excellence in
editing, writing, photography, graphic design and electronic publishing.
The ACP represents some 200 religious publications.
Sixteen ACP awards were given to ELCA journalists at the Religious
Communication Congress 2000: "Faith Stories in a Changing World," March
29-April 1. The congress is a once-per-decade gathering of religion
communicators from around the world.
The "Seeds for the Parish" newsletter earned an "Award of Merit"
in the "Best of Class" category, ACP's top award. The newsletter's
editor is Kate Sprutta Elliott of the ELCA Department for Communication.
The Lutheran magazine also received an "Award of Merit" under the
"Best of Class" category for best denominational general interest
magazine. The editor of the magazine is the Rev. David L. Miller.
Staff and volunteers of the ELCA News and Information Service
earned an "Award of Merit" for news coverage of the 1999 ELCA Churchwide
Assembly. John R. Brooks is ELCA director for news and information.
An "Honorable Mention" award went to "Forgiving the Unforgivable," by
Melissa O. Ramirez, ELCA News and Information, for best feature article
in a newspaper or news service.
Three "Awards of Excellence" were given to The Lutheran magazine
for "Indelible Images," by Miller, best feature article in a special
interest magazine; "Oh, My Kosovo," by Miller, best photography with an
article or cut line; and "Rewiring Confirmation," by the Rev. Michael L.
Sherer, best professional resource.
The Lutheran earned three "Awards of Merit" for "Proud Flesh," by
Terry L. Bowes, best devotional, inspirational article; "Favorite
Teachers," edited and compiled by Jeff Favre and Andrea Pohlmann, best
reader response; and "Living the Mystery," by Miller, best biblical
interpretation. The magazine also received an "Honorable Mention" for
best Web site -- www.thelutheran.org -- Lorel K. Fox, designer.
Lutheran Woman Today, magazine of Women of the ELCA, received
three "Honorable Mentions" for "Bookmarks," by Linda Post Bushkofsky,
best theme issue, section or series in a magazine; "Jesus comes to two
women," by Timothy F. Lull, best biblical interpretation; and "Secure in
the Promise: A Study of Revelation," by Gwen Sayler, best Bible study.
Lutheran Partners magazine received an "Honorable Mention" for
best cartoon called "Hey, How Do I ..." by Ray Johnson.
The "Metro Lutheran" newsletter received an "Honorable Mention"
for best media review, "Spring Book Festival," by Sherer.
The Associated Church Press is an 84-year-old professional
association of 200 religious publications representing a combined
circulation of more than 28 million.
