ELCA COMMUNICATORS RECEIVE RELIGION JOURNALISM AWARDS

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The communication efforts of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were recognized here March 31 by the
Religion Communicators Council (RCC), which presents the DeRose-Hinkhouse
Memorial Award for writing, graphic design, art and photography, non-broadcast
audio and video, and electronic publishing.
Fifteen DeRose-Hinkhouse awards were given to ELCA communicators at
the Religious Communication Congress 2000: "Faith Stories in a Changing
World," March 29-April 1. The Congress is a once-per-decade gathering of
religion communicators from around the world.
"Best of Class" went to Robert W. Fisher, ELCA Southeastern
Pennsylvania Synod, Norristown, Pa., for "Breaking Down Walls, One House
at a Time," a published feature story. The "Best of Class" is the highest
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Award category.
An "Award of Excellence" went to Susan Greeley and Brenda Engelby
for Lutheran Vespers, the radio ministry of the ELCA. Greeley is director
and producer of Lutheran Vespers, and Engelby is associate director of
promotion and placement for the program.
Other "Award of Excellence" recipients included: Nancy J. Stelling
and Susan Edison-Swift for "Fear Not," a series featured in "Lutheran
Woman Today," the magazine of Women of the ELCA; Sheri Boom, Luther
Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., for "Fulfill Your Call," Luther Seminary's
viewbook; Fisher, for "Ministry Link Update," an electronic newsletter:
and Linda Post Bushkofsky, Synod of Lakes and Prairies,
Presbyterian Church U.S.A., for "Presbyterian Life and Times" newsletter.
Bushkofsky is a member of the ELCA.
"Certificate of Merit" recipients included: "Seeds for the Parish,"
an ELCA publication; degree program brochures, Luther Seminary; Women of
the ELCA's Web site; "Come and See," Luther Seminary's 1998-1999 Annual
Report; "Dwelling Places," the 1999 Lenten Devotional, Luther Seminary;
"Be a Samplarian," Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio;
"Faithfulness Sustains the Generations," Synod of Lakes and Prairies;
"Rooted in Faith: 1999 Synod School," Synod of Lakes and Prairies; and
"Taking You to Puerto Rico and Beyond," Synod of Lakes and Prairies.
Nancy L. Smith of Secane, Pa., won a "Shoestring Award" for
"Spirit of St. Matthew Lutheran Church."
RCC is a non-profit organization created to serve the religious
community -- local, national and international. It promotes high
standards for religious public relations and communication, provides
training and continuing education for people engaged in communication on
behalf of religious bodies and institutions, and encourages fellowship
among professional religion communicators. Founded in 1929, it is the
nation's oldest public relations association.
