ELCA COMMUNICATORS HONORED WITH RELIGION COMMUNICATION AWARDS

MINNEAPOLIS (ELCA) -- Communicators and publications of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were honored April 26 by
the Religion Communicators Council (RCC) during its annual meeting here.
The RCC, a professional communication organization, presented nine of
its DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards for materials produced in 2000 by
ELCA communicators.
DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given annually for excellence
in writing, graphic design, art and photography, audio and video
productions, public relations and advertising, and electronic
communication. The awards are named for the late Victor DeRose and the
late Paul M. Hinkhouse, longtime RCC friends who shared a strong
interest in communication excellence.
ELCA churchwide communicators and publications honored by the RCC
were:
+ Seeds for the Parish, a resource publication for congregational
and synod leaders published by the ELCA Department for Communication,
which received an Award of Excellence for best national newspaper.

+ Lutheran Woman Today (LWT), the magazine of Women of the ELCA.
LWT received awards of excellence for best black and white photography
("Relationships That Renew"), and best color photography ("Bold in the
Name"). LWT also received an award of merit for a cover design
("Rest"). The awards cited Nancy J. Stelling, former editor, and
Deborah Bogaert, managing editor.
+ Lutheran Vespers, a radio ministry of the ELCA. It received an
Award of Merit for broadcast ("Praying Out Loud Together"). Susan V.
Greeley is director/producer for Lutheran Vespers, ELCA Department for
Communication.
The RCC honored publications and communicators with ELCA-related
institutions. They were:
+ Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, Columbia, S.C., which
received an Award of Excellence for best overall publication design
(Feed My Lambs). The Rev. Marguerite M. Rourk is editor.
+ Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minn., honored with an Award of Merit
for a booklet ("Be Still and Know That I Am God'). Sheri Booms is
editor.
+ ELCA Board of Pensions, Minneapolis, honored with an Award of
Merit for advertisements it placed in Lutheran Partners, a magazine of
the ELCA Division for Ministry. The Rev. Ronald T. Glusenkamp,
vice president for customer outreach, ELCA Board of Pensions, received
the award.
+ Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia (Pa.), which
received a "shoestring award" for excellence in communication with a
limited budget. The award was given to "Seminary Sunday," Mark A.
Staples, editor.
RCC is a nonprofit organization created to serve the religious
community -- local, national and international. It promotes high
standards for religious public relations and communication, provides
training and continuing education for people engaged in communication on
behalf of religious bodies and institutions, and encourages fellowship
among professional religion communicators. Founded in 1929, it is the
nation's oldest religious public relations association.
