CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY TO OFFER DOCTORAL DEGREE
02-144-AW*
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The School of Education at California
Lutheran University (CLU), Thousand Oaks, Calif., will offer its
first doctoral degree program in educational leadership beginning
this fall. Founded in 1961, CLU is the youngest and one of the first
of 28 Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) affiliated
colleges to offer a doctoral degree.
Under Mildred Murray-Ward, professor and director of the
program, the educational leadership curriculum was designed to help
advance educators into key administrative and instructional
leadership positions.
"The School of Education has built a solid reputation for
excellence and is already viewed as a leader in the educational
community," said Carol Bartell, dean of the School of Education.
"Offering a rigorous, challenging doctoral level program is a natural
ext step for the university."
The doctoral degree program was designed for working
professionals. Classes are held once a week, with occasional
Saturday seminars and online instruction. Only 20 students per year
will be accepted into the four-year program that leads to a doctorate
of education degree (Ed.D.).
"Professional training these days is often quite narrow," said
Dr. Leonard G. Schulze, executive director, ELCA Division for Higher
Education and Schools, who also serves as an advisor to CLU's board
of trustees. "This program, however, is grounded firmly in CLU's
mission: 'to educate leaders for a global society who are strong in
character and judgment, confident in their identity and vocation, and
committed to service and justice.' Graduates of this program will
have not only technical expertise, but both broad understanding and a
deep sense of their ethical responsibility as leaders."
In addition to three new faculty members hired to support the
new program, the program will be based in the newly constructed
Spies-Bornemann Center for Education and Technology. All of the
School of Education faculty will be involved in teaching.
