ULLESTAD RE-ELECTED LUTHERAN BISHOP OF NORTHEASTERN IOWA

CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Steven L. Ullestad was re-elected to
a six-year term as bishop of the Northeastern Iowa Synod of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Ullestad was elected
at the synod's assembly June 7-9 at Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa.
Ullestad, 49, was first elected bishop of the synod in 1992.
He was re-elected on the first ballot with 272 of the 356 votes
cast. Runners-up were the Rev. James M. Glesne, Decorah Lutheran
Church, Decorah, Iowa, with 10 votes and the Rev. Darrel W.
Gerrietts, assistant to the bishop, Northeastern Iowa Synod, Waverly,
and the Rev. Cheryl K. Doely, interim pastor, St. Paul's Lutheran
Church, Waverly, with seven votes each.
Before becoming bishop, Ullestad served as assistant to the
bishop, ELCA Northeastern Iowa Synod, from 1988 to 1992, and was
pastor of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, Hudson, Iowa, from 1979 to
1987.
Ullestad was born in Minneapolis. He earned a bachelor of arts
degree in music education from Wartburg College, and a master of divinity
and a master of sacred theology degree from Wartburg Theological Seminary,
Dubuque, Iowa. Wartburg College is one of 28 ELCA colleges and
universities, and Wartburg Theological Seminary is one of eight ELCA
seminaries.
He and his wife, Ruth, have three children.
The ELCA Northeastern Iowa Synod has 95, 877 baptized members
in 185 congregations. The synod office is in Waverly.
