J.S. BACH FEATURED IN ELCA'S 'MOSAIC' WINTER 2002 ISSUE
02-279-JB
CHICAGO (ELCA) -- MOSAIC, the video magazine of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), features the story of German composer
Johann Sebastian Bach in the Winter 2002 issue, available Dec. 1. The
30-minute documentary, "Glory to God Alone: The Life of J.S. Bach,"
traces Bach's life story and focuses on the relationship between his
work and faith.
The program is available on VHS tape or on digital video disc
(DVD), the first MOSAIC program available in the DVD format, said Tim
Frakes, MOSAIC producer, ELCA Department for Communication.
Cornerstone Television, a satellite-broadcast channel, will air
the program Dec. 31 at 7 p.m. Eastern Time, said Ava Odom Martin,
broadcast media production manager, Department for Communication.
"Many Christians don't know who Bach was," Frakes said. "We want
to introduce or reintroduce J.S. Bach and his music to an entirely new
generation of Christians in America who may not be aware of the rich
musical heritage that exists in the body of work J.S. Bach left for
future generations."
Glory to God Alone features Bach's music and scenes from Eisenach,
Ohrdruf, Weimar, Kothen, Muhlhausen and Leipzig, all in Germany. The
program includes comments from two noted Bach scholars: Christoph Wolff,
professor of music, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass., and author of
the biography "Johann Sebastian Bach: The Learned Musician"; and Robin
Leaver, president of the American Bach Society and professor of sacred
music, Westminster Choir College, Rider University, Princeton, N.J.
Also featured is Christopher Parkening, an internationally
acclaimed classical guitarist and distinguished faculty member,
Pepperdine University, Malibu, Calif.
Melissa O. Ramirez, associate director for news, Department for
Communication, is host of MOSAIC.
MOSAIC is produced and distributed by the ELCA Department for
Communication. It is intended for educational use in a variety of
congregational settings including Sunday School classes, adult forums,
youth groups, women's and men's groups, new member classes, church
council meetings, committee meetings and other organizational meetings.
MOSAIC is broadcast Sundays at 10 p.m. Eastern Time on direct
broadcast satellite through Dominion Sky Angel on the Faith TV Network,
available through most cable satellite providers.
Each issue includes a user's guide, with a synopsis of each
segment and discussion questions. MOSAIC is issued quarterly. Annual
subscriptions are available through the ELCA Department for
Communication.
