VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR FLOOD RELIEF
"We are facing a desperate need for volunteers in the Upper Midwest
rebuilding effort. We need your help!" said the Rev. Leon A.
Phillips. Volunteers scheduled for the coming months have fallen off
drastically. Phillips is director of Lutheran Disaster Response.
"Many people assume that rebuilding efforts will stop for the winter
months," Phillips said. "The reality is that thousands of people whose
homes were flooded are still living in trailers or in damaged homes.
We will be going full steam right through the winter -- with inside
work, of course," he said. The city of Grand Forks is providing motel
rooms at no charge for people registering as volunteers through the
Lutheran Disaster Response system, Phillips said. People willing to
volunteer in Minnesota, North Dakota or South Dakota are encouraged to
call 800/987-0061 for a packet of information, housing information and
direct referral to site managers who will match them with a family who
needs their help. "It is far from over," Phillips said. Lutheran
Disaster Response is a cooperative ministry of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in American and Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
