MISSION BUILDERS DIRECTOR APPOINTED

     LISLE, Ill. (ELCA) The board of the Division for Outreach (DO)
of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) appointed Dean
Hiner, North Platte, Neb., as director for Mission Builders, an ELCA
organization whose members build or rehabilitate ELCA-related
facilities.
     Hiner retired after working 16 years for a distributor for the
Pella Window Corporation. He is a volunteer with the Lincoln County
(Neb.) Historical Museum. Hiner is a member of Messiah Lutheran Church,
North Platte. He and his wife Jean, have two daughters: Chrys Tarvin,
Rogers, Ark. and Susan Schukar, Lexington, Neb.
     Hiner has worked on various Mission Builder projects, including
facilities at Feast of Victory Lutheran Church, Acme, Mich.; Messiah/New
Hope Lutheran Church, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Shishmaref Lutheran Church,
Shishmaref, Alaska; and Trinity Lutheran Church, Cass Lake, Minn.
     Since 1986 about 175 Mission Builders have completed 72 projects
in 34 of the ELCA's 65 synods.

     In 1998 Mission Builders completed seven jobs:

Nativity Lutheran Church, Commerce City, Colo.----------- New building
St. Luke Lutheran Church, Colorado Springs, Colo.------- Large addition
Ascension Lutheran Church, Louisville, Ky. --------------- Addition
Christ Lutheran Church, Shingleton, Mich.------------------ New building
Peace Lutheran Church, Sparta, Mich.--------------------- Large addition
Good Earth Village, Spring Valley, Minn.-------------------- Camp additions and two new buildings
Trinity Lutheran Church, Cass Lake, Minn. ----------------- New building

     Nine projects are scheduled for 1999:

Sunrise Lutheran Church, Port St. John, Fla. --------------- New building (completed in March)
Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Chesterton, Ind.-------------- New building
Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bittinger, Md.-------------------- New sanctuary
Messiah Lutheran Church, Aurora, Neb.--------------------- New building
New Creation Lutheran Church, Ottawa, Ohio-------------- New building
Faith Lutheran Church, New Florence, Pa. ------------------ New building
Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Alderwood, Wash. ----------- Addition
Ascension Lutheran Church, Fond du Lac, Wis.----------- New building
Zion Lutheran Church, Superior, Wis. ---------------------- Addition

     Applications from another seven congregations are on hand with
Mission Builders.
     The Division for Outreach has a new video, "A Time to Build Up,"
which tells the story of Mission Builders. Copies are available on loan
