Dear Friends in Disaster Response:
Lutheran Disaster Response has major relief operations going at three sites
during these summer months. Your help is important in meeting the urgent
needs in these places. Here is an update on where volunteers are needed.
Oklahoma: Responding to the May tornadoes. In Moore (suburb of OK City)
and Mulhall (small community north of OK City), debris removal continues
and rebuilding efforts have begun. Skilled volunteers are not required.
However, people with these skills are helpful: carpentry, drywall hanging
and finishing, framing, painting and roofing. Individuals and groups of 35
- 40 are welcome. Gloves and sturdy boots are necessary. An adult must
accompany youth under 18. The local university is providing housing. For
more information, contact Jim Munson at 405-848-1733.
Arkansas: Responding to the January tornadoes. In Royal Oaks (small
community just southwest of Little Rock), volunteers are needed for
demolition, some debris removal, and rebuilding. Again, skilled volunteers
are not required. However, these skills are helpful: installing sheetrock,
roofing, painting, and general carpentry. Items to bring (confirm this
need when calling): hammers, saws, drills, good work gloves, and sturdy
boots. Individuals and groups of up to 50 are welcome. An adult must
accompany youth under 18. Local churches provide housing. For more
information, contact Hal Shope at 501-565-7740; fax 501-562-5489; e-mail:

Texas: Responding to the October floods that affected over 1,300 square
miles in the south central and southeastern part of the state. LDR is
working in collaboration with two interfaiths, Victoria County Interfaith
(in Victoria), and DeWitt County Cares (in Cuero). All volunteers are
welcome. Helpful skills include: framing, drywall hanging and finishing,
plumbing, and electrical. Items to bring: (confirm request and inquire of
specifics when calling) hand tools. Again, good work gloves and sturdy
boots are necessary to wear while working. *Note* -- There is a special
need for ladders. Churches in both Victoria and Cuero provide housing.
Individuals and groups up to 40 are welcome. Youth under 18 must to be
accompanied by an adult. Contact Jean Peercy in Victoria at 361-578-1801;
Dale Peercy in Cuero at 361-275-9741; their e-mail: [log in to unmask]
Please circulate this information in your churches and communities, where
appropriate. We are grateful for your interest and commitment to our
church's disaster response ministry. People in the above areas face an
enormous challenge as they rebuild their lives.
