CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The board of trustees of Grand View College, Des
Moines, Iowa, elected Kent L. Henning, 41, of Kenosha, Wis., president
Nov. 19. Grand View College is a four-year liberal arts institution,
one of 28 colleges and universities of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America (ELCA). Henning will assume his new responsibility in
January 2000.
Henning has been vice president for college relations at Carthage
College in Kenosha since 1991. Carthage is also affiliated with the
ELCA.
He previously served as assistant vice president for advancement
at George Mason University, Fairfax, Va., from 1990-1991; as director of
development and director of annual giving and alumni relations at Duke
University's Fuqua School of Business, Durham, N.C., from 1986 to 1990;
and he was assistant director and later, director, of the Wartburg
Design for Tomorrow, Wartburg College, Waverly, Iowa, from 1980 to
1986.
"Kent Henning was chosen for his strength in fund raising and
college development and advancement, for his belief in the importance
and value of colleges such as Grand View, and for his enthusiasm," said
Charles S. Johnson, executive vice president, DuPont, Wilmington, Del.,
and chair of the Grand View Board of Trustees.
Henning said he was drawn to Grand View for a number of reasons.
"Throughout the search process my respect for Grand View College
grew, and grew significantly," he said. "I met with scores of
individuals who are very talented and dedicated to the college and its
future. It will truly be an honor to serve one of our Lutheran colleges
as its president."
"I look forward to joining the Grand View community as well as to
becoming part of the Des Moines community," Henning added. "I fully
expect to work hard, spend long days on campus, travel countless miles
off campus and make many new friends. I have every reason to believe
Grand View's future is bright."
Henning, a native of McGregor, Iowa, has a master of business
administration degree from Duke University and a bachelor of arts degree
from Wartburg College. Henning and his wife Carole have two daughters,
Audrey, 9, and Julia, 6.
Henning succeeds Thomas W. Thomsen, who resigned last spring to
become president of Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. Robert Vogel,
retired president of Wartburg College, has served as interim president
since May.
