ELCA NEWS SERVICE June 23, 2004 Sue Rothmeyer Named To ELCA Leadership Post With DHES 04-127-JB CHICAGO (ELCA) -- The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), announced the appointment of Sue E. Rothmeyer as interim executive director of the ELCA Division for Higher Education and Schools (DHES), effective July 19. Rothmeyer, 44, is currently director for campus ministry with DHES. She succeeds Dr. Leonard G. Schulze, who left the churchwide organization June 15 at the conclusion of his four-year term as executive director. Schulze will assume a new academic role this fall at Carthage College, an ELCA higher education institution in Kenosha, Wis. Rothmeyer will serve as interim executive director through the 2005 Churchwide Assembly, Hanson said. Hanson made the appointment in collaboration with Rod Schofield, Colorado Springs, Colo., chair of the DHES board, and other members of the board's executive committee. "Sue Rothmeyer, a respected colleague on the staff of the Division for Higher Education and Schools, brings to the position of interim executive director a deep commitment to ELCA colleges, universities, campus ministry and schools, strong administrative experience and visionary leadership," Hanson said. "Her gifts are undergirded by her faith and are reflected in her passion for God's mission in the world. She will be a strong voice for Lutheran higher education and schools in the current strategic planning process." Rothmeyer, an ELCA associate in ministry, joined the ELCA churchwide organization in 1995 as director for administration and planning for DHES. She also served as acting co-director for campus ministry before she became director for campus ministry in 2001. Prior to joining the churchwide organization, Rothmeyer was a lay campus minister at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. ---- Information about the ELCA Division for Higher Education and Schools is at http://www.elca.org/education/ on the ELCA Web site.
