Brian Maas elected bishop of ELCA Nebraska Synod

CHICAGO (ELCA) - The Rev. Brian D. Maas was elected June 2 to serve
a six-year term as bishop of the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). He was elected on the fourth ballot
with 432 of the 702 votes at the synod's assembly June 1-2 in Omaha.
Maas is pastor of First Lutheran Church in Lincoln, Neb. He succeeds
the Rev. David L. deFreese, who was first elected bishop of the synod in
2000 and re-elected in 2006.
Born in Pierce, Neb., Maas earned a bachelor's degree at Nebraska
Wesleyan University in Lincoln; a Master of Divinity Degree at Yale
University, New Haven, Conn.; and a Certificate of Studies at Lutheran
Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, an ELCA seminary in Gettysburg, Pa.
Following his ordination in 1992, he was pastor of ELCA congregations in
Tekamah, Neb., and Kansas City, Mo.
Maas will be installed as synod bishop Sept. 22 at St. Paul Lutheran
Church in Grand Island, Neb.
