AUGSBURG OFFERS YOUTH AND FAMILY MAJOR

Augsburg College, Minneapolis, is offering a new academic major in
youth and family ministry. Students majoring in youth and family
ministry will undertake interdisciplinary course work in theology,
education and social sciences. The major will also combine practical
and theological training, using the resources of the Augsburg Youth
and Family Institute and its partner congregations, said the Rev.
Richard A. Hardel, Institute director. Students will have the
opportunity to do internships at the approximately 50 Twin
Cities-area congregations that are partners in the Institute. The
new major shows that Augsburg "is responding to the needs of
congregations in the area of youth and family ministry," said Hardel.
"People who graduate with this major will have the opportunity to
shape the faith and lives of many young people." The major will be
offered in the fall of 1996. Graduates might typically become
directors of youth or youth and family ministry in congregations.
Augsburg is one of the 28 colleges and universities of the
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
