HUNGER APPEAL EXCEEDS GOAL

"Praise the Lord! Congratulations! and Thanks!" is how the Rev.
Roger O. Livdahl began his March memo to those in the Evangelical
Lutheran Church in America who promote the ELCA World Hunger
Appeal. Livdahl, the appeal's director, reacted to news that
1995 contributions to the appeal totaled $12 million -- $556,000
more than the previous year and $626,000 more than budget.
Richard L. McAuliffe, ELCA treasurer, reported March 1 on
receipts for the fiscal year ending Jan. 31, 1996. "This means
that we were able to meet all our agency commitments for 1995 and
will have additional funds to share with Lutheran World Relief,
Lutheran World Federation and our other international and
domestic partners," said Livdahl. LWR, the overseas relief and
development arm of the ELCA and the Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1995. LWF, the Geneva-
based communion of 56 million Lutherans in 122 member church
bodies in 68 countries, funds humanitarian projects around the
world through its World Service department. Relief efforts of
the church in the United States and Caribbean, supported through
ELCA Disaster Response funds, received $1.4 million in fiscal
1995 -- about the same amount received the previous year.
