1999 ELCA ASSEMBLY IN DENVER

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's 1999 Churchwide
Assembly will be held August 16-22 in Denver, Colo. The ELCA
Church Council made that decision during its April 12-15 meeting
in Chicago. The biennial Churchwide Assembly is the ELCA's chief
legislative body. Because of the space requirements and "because
the utmost attention is exercised for the control of costs
related to the assembly, comparatively few sites lend themselves
to assembly use," said the Rev. Lowell Almen, ELCA secretary.
Key cost factors are overall price for transportation, convention
space, housing and food for 1,200 voting members and hundreds of
advisory members. The 1997 assembly will be held in
Philadelphia. The ELCA has 5.2 million members in 11,000
congregations across the United States and Caribbean.
