Title: LUTHERANS RESPOND TO TEXAS TORNADO ELCA NEWS SERVICE - NEWSBRIEF June 12, 1997 LUTHERANS RESPOND TO TEXAS TORNADO The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America is responding to a tornado and heavy storms in Jarrel, Texas, through Lutheran Social Services of the South. The tornado killed 28 people and destroyed 300 homes in Jarrel and Cedar Park in May. Needs assesment is under way, according to the Rev. Leon A. Phillips Jr., director for Lutheran Disaster Response and ELCA Domestic Disaster Response. LDR, a cooperative effort of the ELCA and the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, has issued grants totaling $3,000. LSS of the South is managing this response for LDR.
