Dear brothers and sisters,

Late last evening, May 30, a powerful tornado caused massive destruction in
Spencer, South Dakota, a small town of 300 houses. The twister claimed at
least five lives, injured 150 people, and damaged two Lutheran churches.
Many people are still missing at this writing, as rescue efforts continue.

Lutheran Disaster Response is responding through Lutheran Social Services
of South Dakota. Mr. Jim Barclay, president of LSS-SD, will be on site
today. Emergency generators are being provided to volunteers, who will
help with the initial cleanup of debris. A counseling staff is also being
deployed. As more information becomes available, I will report it to you.
By your continuing prayers, please uphold those affected by this latest
disaster, as well as all who may be affected by severe weather across the
upper Midwest and Northeast today. Your donations will enable the church
to continue its response to South Dakota and to so many areas across our
country that are being affected by severe spring weather.
